September's Best of the Best

Why hello, it's been some time. September was a weird month full of transitions. I've been focusing on spending less time plugged into the internet and I've noticed that my mental clarity is much sharper than ever. Truth be told, another reason I've been MIA is that I just haven't been in the right mindset to blog. Social media is fickle and even after several years, I am still trying to find some balance in my life. To jumpstart my journey back to blogging, here are my long overdue monthly favorites. Oh, and tomorrow is my eighteenth birthday!

Above (L/R): Mark Rothko Orange & Yellow (1956) and Orange, Red, Yellow (1961)

Through My Eyes

White Collar: USA Network totally peaked from 2009-2012 with its amazing lineup of Suits, NCIS, and White Collar. After catching up on Suits over the summer, I decided to switch gears to White Collar, the FBI meets con-man meets art theft show. It's one of those shows that becomes redundant after a while but still provides some mindless entertainment when necessary.

Lady Gaga's music videos:  I have been the biggest Lady Gaga fan since her Fame Monster days and genuinely think she is the best artist of our time. One night this month, my brother and I watched a ton of her music videos, which are essentially genius pieces of musical and visual art. My favorites are forever Marry the Night, Paparazzi, and You & I. Go take a look.

Autumn movies: You've Got Mail, When Harry met Sally, Hocus Pocus, Love Story, Rushmore, Dead Poets Society.... Autumnal movies should be a film genre of their own. I always find them to be both comforting and nostalgic. I recommend watching them all with a hot coffee in hand.

In My Ears

Playlists: I've curated some new playlists for fall that you can access via Spotify. Here are some of my favorites right now:

Gold Dust Woman - Fleetwood Mac

Last Mile Home - Kings of Leon

No You Girls - Franz Ferdinand

Drinkee- Sofi Tukker

Wake Up - Circa Waves

Everything Now- Arcade Fire

Green Light (Chromeo Remix) - Lorde

Whole Wide World (Unpeeled) - Cage the Elephant

The Man- The Killers

In My Wardrobe

Vintage Kimonos: I purchased a vintage kimono style jacket via Etsy after being struck with sartorial inspo from nothing other than... The Parent Trap. Does the yacht dinner scene ring a bell? Instead of going the full mile, I plan to wear my new jacket with denim, t-shirts, and boots.

Checkered vans: Speaking of funkier pieces, I finally jumped on the checkered vans wagon a decade too late. The ultra classic skater shoe received a modern update with a small platform. Safe to say, I have not worn any other shoes this past month.

In the Kitchen

Tumeric: I've been reading up on anti-inflammatory diets and gut health in order to get my skin back in balance. A few things I've been doing are: 1) cutting down my coffee intake (at least a little bit), 2) drinking kombucha regularly, 3) taking a probiotic, and 4) sneaking in tumeric here and there. Some of my favorite ways are a golden milk latte or as a seasoning for tofu and vegetables.

Waffles: Since it's starting to get cold again in the mornings, I have started to incorporate hot breakfast again, in lieu of smoothie bowls.  A favorite of mine is protein waffles. All I do is mix my favorite (vegan) chocolate protein powder, buckwheat pancake mix, baking soda, maca powder, cinnamon, coconut sugar, and some almond milk together. Pour it into waffle maker and out comes pure magic.

Other & Other

Early rising: Getting back into a routine is always difficult. Add school into the equation and oof... One of the things I've been actively attempting to improve is my sleep habits. Truth be told, my sleep schedule is often out of whack, especially as school work piles on, so unless I make a conscious effort to sign off and get some shuteye, I'd be up till the sun rises. One of the biggest "hacks" that has helped me is having an Amazon Echo Dot. No joke. Having an alarm that you can't just switch off and roll back to bed makes a big difference in my morning. Once I hear that annoying sound, I am ~forced~ to get up and at it.

WKND TRIP MIXTAPE

You, me, and another 40 million Americans are going to be hitting the road, rails, and tarmacs this weekend in honor of the best holiday weekend ever. Drumroll please.... the 4th of July!!! *cue the fireworks*

If you are also a music junkie, a la yours truly, or simply appreciate some enjoyable bops when you are in transit, I've got you covered.

In the music motherland, aka Spotify, I've put together a playlist that will take you straight from the passenger seat to the beach. And once you have arrived at your sweet destination, switch over to my other playlist, dubbed "out here on the isle", for a glorious 22 hours and 17 minutes of sweet summatime jamming.

As for me, I'll be heading up to Newport, Rhode Island for a big ole dosage of happy (constitutional and rightfully patriotic) American fun.

January Moodboard & Mixtape

JanMoodboard.jpg

Greetings this Monday morning (or whenever you're getting the chance to read this). It's a new year, but that doesn't mean that M*squared is being kicked to the curb. We, meaning yours truly,  are back with a spankin' brand-new moodboard and mixtape to help start off this week and this month on a fresh foot.

The Moodboard

My sartorial goal right now to have a little more fun and add some pizzazz to my wardrobe. This pizzazz I'm talking about can be either those more funky pieces that can be paired with the classics, or wild prints and textures. I tend to keep it quite neutral and simple during the colder months, but after some time it feels stale. Maybe I won't be able to shake things up right away, but that doesn't mean I can't plan ahead for Spring Break and Spring. In the meantime, I'm sticking to mixing in more jewelry and perhaps some color? We will see.

December Mixtape & Moodboard

During November, my calendar was hopping, so out of sleep necessity, I skipped last month's m^squared post. Don't fret my friends, because we are back up and running, bringing you a fair dosage of moodboard-ing and a very special holiday mixtape. Instead of droning on and ending up repeating myself, let me just say that I have a fair share of festive content coming your way over the next 24 days. To start off, did you see the launch of my latest series, "Festive Footnotes"?

As for the mood this month, we have those reds for the festive touch, but no doubt, paired with neutrals of navy and worn cream. Blush has also made a return - being the ideal partner in crime to the festive red. Graphic t-shirts, piled high gold jewelry, and red accents are all I'm about right now.

To wrap things up (lol, love a good Christmas pun), here is this month's special mixtape to get you in the mood for this season. A complete (and pretty damn good) compilation of my favorite songs.

+ Wonderful Christmastime by Paul McCartney

+ Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree by Brenda Lee

+ Little Saint Nick by The Beach Boys

+ Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) by U2

+ Jingle Bell Rock by Bobby Helms

+ Run Rudolph Run by Chuck Berry

+ Carol of the Bells by Peter J. Wilhousky

+ It's the Most Wonderful Time of Year by Andy Williams

+ Jingle Bells (ft. The Puppini Sisters) by Michael Bublé

+ All I Want for Christmas is You by Mariah Carey

+ Happy Xmas (War is Over) by John Lennon

+ God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen by Barenaked Ladies

October Moodboard & Mixtape

It's FALL!!!!! October is my month. Not only for the fact that I was born during the universe's golden period, but I feel as if I come alive during these glorious 31 days. I always get a few laughs when I mention October is my favorite month, since I'm known to not be Halloween's biggest fan.

Yet, October is my renaissance and I am reborn over and over again, metaphorically that is. Here are my top reasons why these are the best days of the year. GO!

~ hot coffee, sweaters, boots, candles, windows open & down, vampire weekend, fall foliage, apple cider, rhode island (in the fall), best sailing season, central park comes alive, chilly mornings, grey afternoons, hiking, birthdays, long weekends, lazy sundays spent reading, pancakes, diner runs ~

I could go and on, but instead I'll spend these precious hours basking in the October air.

Fashion-wise, I'm embracing the changing of the seasons with the following; leopard coats, sandals with loose denim and knits, OV leggings and t-shirts during morning coffee runs, and baseball caps with EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN.

September Moodboard & Mixtape

Praise! REJOICE! The hot and steamy is coming to an end and I'm in a fall state of mind despite what weather.com informs me.

Ignorance is bliss.

Soon enough though, the weather will balance out my lust for leaves and sweater weather.... wow, I have problems. On the sartorial side of my wild brain, I have been dreaming of a high neck meets fisherman knit, perhaps in a deep blue or a mustard? I've been scouring the interwebs, but I have come to think that the vintage route is the best way. Come October, I'm imagining these "sweaters" (aka a fixture of my dreams) paired with Outdoor Voices leggings for the dreamiest errands outfit known to mankind.

For the general vibe, I tend to veer into the classic prep lane when Autumn rolls around. It feels right to stick to more traditional clothing with droplets of rock and roll mixed in. 60s prep meets 70s hippie is forever my aesthetic. Quite a strong one, mid I inject.

In the ears and on the speakers is tons of old school rock and roll; Rolling Stones, Ramones, Beatles, Eagles. Their music is made to sound best live, so be sure to click those when searching on your musical channel of choice. For me, it's Spotify. And you can listen to it all, here, in my Autumn 16 playlist.

My other current crushes are the following: Outdoor Voices everything, Glossier's new super serums, my new leopard coat, cauliflower rice, hot coffee, and the holy grail of Whole Food's oatmeal: gingerbread.

What a time to be alive.
