Why hello, it's been some time. September was a weird month full of transitions. I've been focusing on spending less time plugged into the internet and I've noticed that my mental clarity is much sharper than ever. Truth be told, another reason I've been MIA is that I just haven't been in the right mindset to blog. Social media is fickle and even after several years, I am still trying to find some balance in my life. To jumpstart my journey back to blogging, here are my long overdue monthly favorites. Oh, and tomorrow is my eighteenth birthday!
Above (L/R): Mark Rothko Orange & Yellow (1956) and Orange, Red, Yellow (1961)
Through My Eyes
White Collar: USA Network totally peaked from 2009-2012 with its amazing lineup of Suits, NCIS, and White Collar. After catching up on Suits over the summer, I decided to switch gears to White Collar, the FBI meets con-man meets art theft show. It's one of those shows that becomes redundant after a while but still provides some mindless entertainment when necessary.
Lady Gaga's music videos: I have been the biggest Lady Gaga fan since her Fame Monster days and genuinely think she is the best artist of our time. One night this month, my brother and I watched a ton of her music videos, which are essentially genius pieces of musical and visual art. My favorites are forever Marry the Night, Paparazzi, and You & I. Go take a look.
Autumn movies: You've Got Mail, When Harry met Sally, Hocus Pocus, Love Story, Rushmore, Dead Poets Society.... Autumnal movies should be a film genre of their own. I always find them to be both comforting and nostalgic. I recommend watching them all with a hot coffee in hand.
In My Ears
Playlists: I've curated some new playlists for fall that you can access via Spotify. Here are some of my favorites right now:
Gold Dust Woman - Fleetwood Mac
Last Mile Home - Kings of Leon
No You Girls - Franz Ferdinand
Drinkee- Sofi Tukker
Wake Up - Circa Waves
Everything Now- Arcade Fire
Green Light (Chromeo Remix) - Lorde
Whole Wide World (Unpeeled) - Cage the Elephant
The Man- The Killers
In My Wardrobe
Vintage Kimonos: I purchased a vintage kimono style jacket via Etsy after being struck with sartorial inspo from nothing other than... The Parent Trap. Does the yacht dinner scene ring a bell? Instead of going the full mile, I plan to wear my new jacket with denim, t-shirts, and boots.
Checkered vans: Speaking of funkier pieces, I finally jumped on the checkered vans wagon a decade too late. The ultra classic skater shoe received a modern update with a small platform. Safe to say, I have not worn any other shoes this past month.
In the Kitchen
Tumeric: I've been reading up on anti-inflammatory diets and gut health in order to get my skin back in balance. A few things I've been doing are: 1) cutting down my coffee intake (at least a little bit), 2) drinking kombucha regularly, 3) taking a probiotic, and 4) sneaking in tumeric here and there. Some of my favorite ways are a golden milk latte or as a seasoning for tofu and vegetables.
Waffles: Since it's starting to get cold again in the mornings, I have started to incorporate hot breakfast again, in lieu of smoothie bowls. A favorite of mine is protein waffles. All I do is mix my favorite (vegan) chocolate protein powder, buckwheat pancake mix, baking soda, maca powder, cinnamon, coconut sugar, and some almond milk together. Pour it into waffle maker and out comes pure magic.
Other & Other
Early rising: Getting back into a routine is always difficult. Add school into the equation and oof... One of the things I've been actively attempting to improve is my sleep habits. Truth be told, my sleep schedule is often out of whack, especially as school work piles on, so unless I make a conscious effort to sign off and get some shuteye, I'd be up till the sun rises. One of the biggest "hacks" that has helped me is having an Amazon Echo Dot. No joke. Having an alarm that you can't just switch off and roll back to bed makes a big difference in my morning. Once I hear that annoying sound, I am ~forced~ to get up and at it.
